Material World

This past Sunday my mom, sister, and I decided to head down to the IMA to see the Material World exhibit. The Material World exhibit features objects with extravagant ornamentation of textiles and personal adornment from cultures around the world while highlighting the significance of textiles in displaying wealth, status, and power. The exhibit featured items with luxurious materials from Buddhist cultures to Dior and Chanel. I had a great time at the exhibit, it was a great presentation of some very detailed and luxurious textiles. Here are a few pictures I took at the exhibit and the IMA.

This is a ceremonial ensemble from Guinea or Liberia that is adorned with feathers from the great blue touraco.

This evening ensemble is designed by Normal Norell, an Indiana born designer. The gold sequins were all sewn on by hand, simply amazing.

The first design by YSL for the House of Dior. This dress is from the Trapeze collection and is made of five layers of tulle.

This Halston dress was inspired by Asian styles and the beadwork consists of mirrors, glass and pearl beads, and also sequins.

We all die over a classic Chanel suit. The suit is made of metallic threads dyed in gold and silver and the edges are trimmed with none other than the famous Chanel braid.

This Charles Worth court dress design consists of a 12 foot train made of silk-velvet and decorated with floral motifs using glass beads and sequins.

A Chanel cape that has over hundreds of silk georgette feathers that were dyed to match the fabric.

A Halston piece embroidered with bugle and pearl beads. The jacket with batwing sleeves is made of a single piece of fabric cut in a circle.

The exhibit is a must see for anyone interested in textiles and fashion. The details of the garments are so amazing but pictures do not do them justice. Admission is free and the IMA has great inspiration for other projects you may be thinking up. It was the perfect Sunday spent with my mom and sister. Hope everyone had a lovely Easter!!!
